  1. Ghost stories don t scare me They have not since I was an adolescent I approached this book warily, but not due to concerns about things that go bump in the night Contemporary reality is far disturbing than anything fiction can cook up Thus I was glad to discover that this was of a murder mystery than a ghost story And it s excellent, too.The story jumps time frames Readers follow a quartet of girls at the Idlewild Boarding School in 1950, in Barrons, VT Idlewild is a place of indifference and n [...]

  2. One of my favorite book tubers highly recommended The Broken Girls After her description of the book, I knew I had to pick it up The Broken Girls is a mix of historical fiction, mystery thriller, and ghost story I thought I try a new type of review and give my top ten things I loved about The Broken Girls by Simone St James.10 The creepy girls boarding school, Idlewild Hall and it s garden that grew nothing The gloomiest setting I ve ever read about.9 The friend bond between Sonia, Katie, CeCe a [...]

  3. You know what I liked most about this story The balance There was plenty of struggle and terrible human parts, but they were always balanced with revelation, discovery, and victory There was a great cast of characters with dignity and delight that you want to high five, hug, and invite over for tea.I like dark and twisted stories But this one, the evil is presented in the daylight Meaning, it s not haunting you in the dark hours You discover all the villains but it is packed with so much triumph [...]

  4. It was ok What started out as a creepy paranormal story turned into a dirty cop story I hate when authors bait and switch the readers like that The whole man behind the curtain part of the plot was incredibly predictable The death of the main characters sister had absolutely nothing to do with the death of the girl running from something in chapter 1 Nothing to do with the ghost of Mary Hand Nothing to do with the school Mary Hand has nothing to do with the plot really either There is just a bun [...]

  5. I have to admit, I nearly gave up on this book after about the first third of it I stuck with it and did actually end up liking it.I should say ,though, that the ghost story is the weakest part of the book If you took that aspect completely out, it would be a stronger book.

  6. Well, this was a successful horror thriller combo in my opinion.Split between two main timelines, this book focuses on Idlewild Hall, a boarding school for illegitimate and troublesome girls during the early to mid nineteen hundreds. Its 1950, Sonia, Katie, Cece and Roberta all share a dorm in Idlewild Hall Mary Hand also lives in Idlewild, but is Mary Hand a legend, a myth, a figment of everyone s imagination or is she real In 2014, Fiona is grieving, she s been grieving for almost 20 years, sin [...]

  7. This is my first Simone St James and I loved it, I just wish the digital versions of her other books weren t so relatively expensive in the UK, I ve had one of them on my TBR for ages. This was a strange mix, a detective story, a bit of romance only a wee bit , a bit of history and a few ghosts In the front story, we have a journalist who has never got over the murder of her sister twenty years ago discovering that the old school where her body was dumped is now being re opened In the back story, [...]
