  1. How can a novella with such a brilliant concept and deliciously creepy execution wind up with such a blah ending I feel like I was taken on a trek up a treacherous mountain with the promise of an incredible view at the summit only to find out that someone built a wall blocking the view.I was hooked from the first two sentences Turn left at the screaming woman with a collapsing face Turn right at the kneeling man with bleeding sore the size of teacups What a wonderful hedge maze What an amazing h [...]

  2. 3. I read Shipp s earlier works and loved the intelligent originality and creativity that he brings to horror With this novella, he has had exceeded my expectations like a modern day Poe All of Poe s tales had horrifying psychological overtones, fantastic imagery and overtly creepy atmosphere If Poe lived now, in an age of violence, serial killers and atrocities, he could have written Shipp s novella.Shipp s terse descriptions are hand crafted to be spot on A single sentence delivers a wealth of me [...]

  5. This is a short ish read, but at the same time it s just long enough It doesn t need to be any longer. The details are gruesome, and the story weaves seamlessly between waking and dreaming, and where it s not always clear what s what, it s clearly intended. This story is a great companion for a rainy afternoon.
