  1. Oh, Barbara.Have you ever had a friend who just love, but she can t get out of her own way This is how I m starting to feel about Barbara Kingsolver s writing She is so talented She s funny and smart and insightful And she just can t get out of her own way Once upon a time, Barbara Kingsolver wrote these amazing novels, exciting and emotionally powerful and page turners in the most exciting way page turners because of the ideas inside them, not because of cheap thrills Pigs in Heaven was a suspe [...]

  2. I used to love Barbara Kingsolver s writing The Poisonwood Bible, Bean Trees, and Animal Dreams are some of my favorite novels But then she started getting very preachy, using her novels for what I interpret as authorial interjection I feel lectured by her on a variety of subjects that must be close to her heart In fact, many of her causes are close to my own heart Despite this commonality of social consciousness and politics, that is not what I want to find in a novel I want to be transported, [...]

  3. This book was atrocious. It s not a novel or a story it s just preaching about politics.Conservatives are portrayed by Willa s angry, scared and very rude father in law Of course, he was the Evil right This author needs to get over her own political beliefs and just write a novel without taking on the burden of enlightning all of us of our evil ways.Yet, the main character, Willa, is portrayed as a wise, but beaten down liberal but she was simply whiny She s in her 60s and has inherited a house, [...]

  4. I don t know how I read this I actually skipped from 70% on my Kindle and read the last page I didn t care about one character, I couldn t even tell what this book was about or why it was written I have loved Kingsolver Poisonwood Bible is one of my favorite books and several of her others are my top 20 books But this book I wish I could get my money back.

  5. I really love this author and was delighted at the prospect of a new novel at last However I have found it really disappointing I haven t quite finished it yet which says a lot I ve raced through the previous ones and re read them with no less pleasure This book does have several glimpses of the usual clever prose but, on the whole it is turgid, there isn t a single character with any depth than a postage stamp and the general effect is that of a very long and involved lecture I actually regret [...]

  6. I pay attention to reviews, I really do, and early reviews of this novel suggested that Kingsolver had not exactly hit this one out of the park, so I was apprehensive when I finally picked it up I am happy to say I loved it.There are two narratives in this novel two families face their own disintegration in a crumbling New Jersey house than 150 years apart The ever present danger of collapsing roof and walls gives the book its theme as well as its title the lady scientist in the 1870 s narrative [...]
